CPSC, EN 1078, NTA 8776 and MIPS — what each one means

A bike helmet sold in the US must meet the CPSC standard; that is the legal floor, and almost every helmet you can buy clears it. Because CPSC is near-universal, it tells you little about how one helmet compares to another. The standards that actually separate helmets — and the ones that matter as e-scooters get faster — sit above it. EN 1078 is the European bicycle-helmet standard, broadly comparable to CPSC in its impact test. NTA 8776 is the one to look for on a faster scooter: it is a Dutch standard written for speed-pedelecs, tests impacts at higher speed than EN 1078, and requires more head coverage, particularly at the back and temples. A helmet certified to NTA 8776 has been tested for the kind of crash a 20-to-28 mph scooter can produce, which a plain bicycle helmet has not. MIPS is a different kind of thing, and worth understanding rather than treating as a buzzword. It is not an impact standard; it is a low-friction layer inside the helmet that lets the shell rotate a few millimetres against your head during an angled impact. The claim is that it reduces the rotational forces most linked to brain injury in real-world, off-axis crashes — the ones where you don't hit the ground squarely. MIPS is a feature a maker either builds in or doesn't; it complements a standard rather than replacing one, so the strongest helmets here carry a high impact standard and a rotational-management system like MIPS.

Why we read the standard from the maker, never the listing

The same discipline we apply to lock grades applies here, and it matters more because the stakes are your head. “NTA 8776” or “MIPS” typed into an Amazon bullet costs a seller nothing and is not a certificate. So we do not take a standard from a marketplace listing, a retailer page, or a review. If a maker states EN 1078 but we cannot confirm NTA 8776 on their own page, the card shows EN 1078 and not NTA 8776 — we never round a claim up. We are deliberately clear about what a standard is not. A certified helmet is one that passed a defined laboratory test; it is not a promise that you will walk away from any given crash, and no helmet is a substitute for riding within your limits. Fit and coverage do as much as the label

A helmet only protects the part of your head it covers, and only if it stays put.
