E-scooter accessories, ranked on certification

Most accessory round-ups rank on whatever the seller wrote in the listing. We don't. Where an independent body grades a product — Sold Secure for locks, EN 1078 and NTA 8776 for helmets, ANSI FL1 for light output — we read the grade from that body's own register and rank on it, with a link back so you can check. Where no such grade exists, we say so rather than invent a ranking.

A certification is a graded lab result, not a promise about your specific theft, crash or ride. And nothing here is a legal-compliance check: your state's equipment law is quoted, separately, on each state's law page.

For a faster scooter, look for NTA 8776 — it is tested at higher impact speeds and covers more of the head — ideally with MIPS on top for rotational protection. Read the standards first, then weigh weight, ventilation and a genuinely snug fit.

Lights

ANSI/PLATO FL1-rated output — honest, tested lumens — never a marketing lumen claim.

Trust the FL1 figure, not the number on the box: a light whose maker states ANSI FL1 output is the only honest way to compare brightness. For city visibility a mid-power front light and a bright rear are plenty; for unlit roads, buy real FL1 output and check the runtime at that brightness.

How we verify a certification

  1. We start from the certifying body's register — for locks, the Sold Secure Approved Product Search — not from a product's marketing page. The register lists what was actually graded.
  2. We capture that register entry and commit it, so the grade we show is checked, word for word, against a saved copy of the source. A claim we can't match to the register is not published.
  3. An Amazon bullet saying “Sold Secure Gold” is never our evidence. We use Amazon only for the ASIN, price and seller-listed specs — and we flag those specs as seller-supplied.
