The total is purchase price plus electricity plus consumables over your chosen ownership period. Every assumption is visible and, where it reasonably can be, editable — a calculator that hides its inputs is not a credibility asset.
Electricity
We assume roughly 25 watt-hours per mile measured at the wall, which folds in charging losses rather than just the energy that reaches the wheels. Multiplied by your weekly mileage over the ownership period and your electricity rate — defaulted to the US average of $0.17 per kWh but editable, because rates vary enormously by state — this gives the energy cost. It is almost always the smallest line in the total: charging a scooter for a year costs less than a few tanks of petrol, which is much of the point of owning one.
Consumables — and why tyre type matters
This is the line most cost calculators ignore, and it is a genuine difference between models. Pneumatic (air-filled) tyres ride better but puncture, and between tubes, tyres and brake pads we budget about $70 a year for a scooter that uses them. Solid or honeycomb tyres never puncture and need far less attention, so we budget about $25 a year. Over a few years that gap is real money, and it is why a slightly cheaper pneumatic-tyred scooter can end up costing more to run than a solid-tyred one. The calculator reads the tyre type from each model's specification and adjusts automatically.
Comparison modes
If you are replacing car trips, the calculator can weigh the scooter's total against driving the same miles at a documented $0.25 per mile. That figure covers fuel and routine running costs but deliberately excludes car depreciation and insurance, so it is a conservative comparison — the real saving against car ownership is usually larger. If you are replacing transit, it compares against a $70-per-month pass. Both comparison figures are assumptions you can reason about, not precise claims about your situation.
Cost per mile
Dividing the total by the miles you will ride gives a cost-per-mile that makes very different scooters comparable. A $3,000 performance machine ridden lightly can cost more per mile than a $500 commuter ridden daily; a cheap scooter you use constantly can be astonishingly cheap per mile. Per-mile cost is the honest way to judge value across price brackets, and it is why we surface it prominently.
What this does not include
We do not model battery replacement, which for most riders happens beyond the typical ownership window but is a real eventual cost — a replacement pack can run several hundred dollars, and removable-battery designs make it cheaper. We also do not model resale value, insurance, or the value of your time.
